Professor R. Merfyn Jones is among the most prominent historians of modern Wales.
His main achievements include his pioneering volume on the quarrymen of Gwynedd, The North Wales Quarrymen, 1874-1922, and the landmark television series Cymru 2000 broadcast at the turn of the millennium.
Following an academic career at Swansea, Liverpool and Bangor universities, he was appointed Vice-Chancellor of Bangor University in 2004.
Following the establishment of the Coleg Cymraeg in 2011, he was appointed as the first chair of the Board of Directors, and played an integral part in establishing the Coleg as a national body.
He emphasized particularly the principle that every academic discipline can be taught and debated through the medium of Welsh, a principle that is now central to the Coleg’s academic strategy.
