Professor Gareth Roberts

Gareth Roberts hails from Holywell in Flintshire. He graduated in Mathematics from Oxford University and achieved a doctorate from Nottingham University. He followed a career in education working across Wales before being appointed to a post at the Coleg Normal, Bangor. He became Principal of that College and following its merger with the University of Wales, Bangor, he was appointed Pro Vice-Chancellor and Professor of Education. Amongst other things, he was responsible for Welsh medium provision at the University and played a very active role in the negotiations that led to the establishment of the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol.

After the Coleg's establishment, he was appointed member of the external Appointments Committee, responsible for appointing members of the Coleg's Board of Directors, and served that committee from 2011 until last year.

Throughout his career, Gareth Roberts has popularised mathematics through the medium of Welsh, publishing his book Mae Pawb yn Cyfrif in 2012. He won the Science and Technology Prize at the National Eisteddfod in 2010.
