Nearly 180 students will benefit from receving extra financial support during their time at university thanks to the the Coleg Cymraeg Scholarship Scheme.
Each individual will receive £1,500 or £3,000 over three years and they will be asked to complete a period of work experience through the medium of Welsh and sit the Welsh Language Skills Certificate as a result.
The scholarships will be awarded this year to students in universities across Wales who will study a wide variety of subjects.
Becca Martin, who will receive £3,000 to study French and Spanish at Swansea University was thrilled to hear the news:
‘‘Thanks to the scholarship, I can continue to study through the medium of Welsh which will ensure that I’m fluent in four languages. The scholarship will enable me to buy essential resources for the course. My advice to perspective students is to apply for the Coleg Cymraeg Scholarship in future and not to doubt your ability to study part of your degree course through Welsh, go for it!’’
For the first time this year, Medicine was eligible for the Coleg’s Incentive Scholarship and Sean Downes of Ysgol Morgan Llwyd was succesful in his application to study the course at Cardiff University:
‘‘The Coleg’s Scholarship will be a great help to me and studying part of the subject through Welsh will enable me to deal with patients confidently. The application process was simple and both short and long term advantages are worth while.’’
The Coleg also offers Masters Scholarships worth £3,000. The Coleg’s 2015/2016 Masters Scholarship will close on 13 July 2015 and further information can be found on the Coleg’s website.
