The Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol has recruited ambassadors with the aim of encouraging more prospective students to study part of their degree courses through Welsh.
The 14 ambassadors are located at seven universities across Wales, including three at Swansea University.
Kayleigh Jones, Jeno Lewis and Abbie Heasley will start this month and be responsible for completing various tasks throughout the year.
Their main role will be to persuade school pupils to follow part of their university studies through Welsh and present the advantages of studying through the language.
They will represent the Coleg Cymraeg at school visits, UCAS fairs and Eisteddfodau as well as record their experiences in a brand new blog.
Llais y Llysgennad will give a snapshot of their lives through pictures, videos and much more.
Kayleigh from Ystalyfera, who’s studying Welsh and Mathematics, was one of the first to post, and she was delighted to have the opportunity to study through Welsh after attending Gower College, Swansea:
‘‘After studying Welsh as a second language, I wanted to challenge myself, and ensure that I used Welsh in different situations, outside the classroom.’’
They will have to familiarise themselves with the Coleg Cymraeg Undergraduate Scholarship Scheme and speak about the advantages of receiving a scholarship, as Jeno from Tal-y-bont, who's studying Geography explains:
‘‘When starting at university, money disappears quickly! Therefore, the scholarship is a great help and I’m ready to lead others through the process and encourage them to apply.’’
Abbie from Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw who’s studying Modern Languages, hopes to ease any worries pupils may have about studying through Welsh at higher education level:
‘‘The jump from high school to university is quite terrifying but the lecturers are always ready to help. Studying through Welsh is a way of developing a specialist skill and I would like to encourage others to take advantage of the opportunity to study through the language!’’
