Student Ambassadors Appointed across Welsh Universities

7 January 2016
The Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol has recruited ambassadors with the aim of encouraging more prospective students to study part of their degree courses through Welsh.

The 14 ambassadors are located at seven universities across Wales, including one at Cardiff University.

Elen Davies from Pencader, who's studying Welsh and Journalism will start this month and be responsible for completing various tasks throughout the year.

Her main role will be to persuade school pupils to follow part of their university studies through Welsh and present the advantages of studying through the language.

She will represent the Coleg Cymraeg at school visits, UCAS fairs and Eisteddfodau as well as record her experiences in a brand new blog.

Llais y Llysgennad will give a snapshot of the ambassadors’ lives through pictures, videos and much more.

Elen was the first to post in the blog and her contribution can be seen here.

Elen was delighted to have the opportunity to study through Welsh after leaving Ysgol Dyffryn Teifi:

‘‘I live everyday in Welsh, therefore I was determined to take the opportunity to study through the language. I was also aware that there is a need for Welsh language journalists and that developing bilingual skills would be beneficial when applying for jobs eventually.’’

Elen hopes to ease any worries pupils may have about studying through Welsh at higher education level:

‘‘There’s plenty of support available and you will develop a specialist skill in your field. You will grow in confidence when using Welsh as well as meet people who share the same enthusiasm towards the language!’’

The Coleg Cymraeg blog can be found here and pictures of the ambassadors are on the Coleg Cymraeg Flickr page.
