18 July 2018
Three individuals will be awarded prizes in memory of our nations greats during a special event to be held on the Coleg Cymraeg stand at the 2018 National Eisteddfod in Cardiff.

Gwobr John Davies, Gwobr Merêd and Gwobr Gwyn Thomas will be presented during a reception on the Coleg stand at the Eisteddfod on Wednesday 8 August at 4pm.

These awards in memory of three of Wales’s most influential people during the past fifty years were established a few years ago especially to recognise students’ achievements in different fields.

Gwobr Merêd recognises an existing Coleg student's contribution to Welsh culture and life and the winner this year is Gwyn Aled Rennolff from Swansea University.

Gwyn said: ‘‘I’m very grateful to the Coleg Cymraeg for this special honour which acknowledges all the work that takes place at Swansea University to promote the Welsh language.’’

Gwobr John Davies is awarded for the best Welsh language dissertation on Welsh History and will be given to Elen Mererid Osmond Hughes from Aberystwyth University.

Elen said: ‘‘I’m very grateful to Aberystwyth University for the nomination and the Coleg Cymraeg for the award. I had great pleasure in studying History and receiving this award, which recognises the importance of researching and studying Welsh History is very special to me.’’

Gwobr Gwyn Thomas is awarded to an undergraduate student for the best dissertation in Welsh as an academic subject and according to the panel, Lowri Havard from Swansea University deserves the award this year.

Lowri said: ‘‘Receiving Gwobr Gwyn Thomas will give me a boost as I continue with my academic career. My dissertation was based on his work and I am currently researching towards a post graduate degree in the same field. I can only hope that he would have enjoyed my interpretation of his work.’’

Dr Hefin Jones, Dean of the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol added: ‘‘It’s great to be able to present these yearly awards in memory of three scholars who played such a vital part in the Coleg’s development. We’re grateful to the panels for their work and to the families of Dr Meredydd Evans, Dr John Davies and Dr Gwyn Thomas for their support. I would like to congratulate Gwyn, Elen and Lowri for being chosen to receive these awards and we look forward to celebrating with them at the Eisteddfod next month.’’
