The Board of Directors of the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol have announced that Gareth Pierce will be the new Chair of the Coleg’s Board of Directors from 1 April 2020.
He will succeed the curent Chair, Dr Haydn E. Edwards, who will be coming to the end of his term at the end of March 2020.
Gareth was Chief Executive of the WJEC awarding body until 2018, and before that, was a senior manager at Trinity College. He also contributed as an associate lecturer with the Open University for a significant period. He has held a number of governance roles in the higher education and schools sectors, including membership of the Coleg’s Board in the period between 2011 and 2013 and again since 2018.
More recently, Gareth has undertaken research work and is a freelance writer whilst also chairing the British Mountaineering Council. He is also a member of the group responsible for reviewing the salary and working conditions of teachers in Wales.
Statistics and education have been the main themes of Gareth’s paid employment, including periods as a statistician in the housing and health sectors, as head of mathematics at Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni and a lecturer at Glamorgan University’s Business School.
"It is an honour to serve as Chair as the Coleg’s Board of Directors builds on a successful period under the chairmanship of Dr Haydn Edwards. I look forward to working closely with the directors, staff and partners as the Coleg addresses the delivery of its strategic plan, adapting appropriately to the current exceptional circumstances.”
Rhian Huws Williams, Chair of the Coleg’s Appointments and Governance Standards Committee said:
“It is a pleasure to appoint Gareth as the new Chair of the Board of Directors. He has extensive and wide ranging experience of the statutory and post-compulsory education sectors in Wales and is a natural leader. We look forward to working closely with him during the next period and we wish him well.”
Dr Ioan Matthews, Chief Executive of the Coleg said:
“I very much welcome the appointment of Gareth Pierce as the new chair of the Coleg’s Board of Directors. I have known Gareth for over twenty years, and based on his extensive experience in a number of national organisations and his service as a member of the Board on two separate occasions, I have no doubt that he will be an asset to the Coleg during the challenging period ahead.
“It is a pleasure on behalf of members of the Board of Directors, the Coleg’s officers and everybody associated with the Coleg to thank Dr Haydn E. Edwards for his leadership as Chair since 2017. The innovative and creative way in which he reviewed the Coleg’s constitution and governance arrangements has enabled the Coleg to take on its wider responsibilities as an independent national planning body in the post-compulsory education sector. We wish him the best.”
