The purpose of the research is to find
(i) the maximum level of ability in Welsh that Welsh language learners, and individuals from mixed language backgrounds, can acquire;
(ii) the reasons why speakers from various backgrounds don’t perform in the same way, and how this can (and whether it needs to) be changed;
(iii) to what extent will some speakers not see the need to have a complete grasp of the language’s structures, and what are the implications of this for education and for identifying deficiencies in the language; and finally,
(iv) what are the implications of all this for the learner’s self-confidence and attitudes towards the language?
