The growth and development of Welsh-medium education is a key policy aim of the Welsh Government, and its long term objectives are outlined in the Welsh-medium Education Strategy (Welsh Assembly Government 2003, 2010; Welsh Government 2012). Reports regularly acknowledge the key role of education in achieving the Government's targets of increasing the number of Welsh speakers (Welsh Assembly Government 2002; Welsh Assembly Government 2003; Welsh Government 2012). However, there is one important sector in education that has not received sufficient attention: the further education sector. The shortcomings are twofold: first of all, there is a lack of Welsh-medium provision at this level, and secondly, there is a lack of research on the existing provision and the demand for more provision.
The aim of the project is to fill this gap, using the methodology outlined in the section on 'How to solve the problem?' As well as its academic value, the research could be used by the Government and by various bodies associated with education in Wales, especially the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol.
