The aim of the research is to validate cognitive clinical assessments for Welsh speakers (bilingual) who suffer from dementia.

Research has shown that first language Welsh speakers who suffer from dementia wish to have the option of having the assessments conducted through the medium of Welsh. In addition,  experimental research has shown that assessing Welsh speaking (bilingual) individuals through the medium of English can have a negative impact on their performance in the assessments.

Therefore, it is essential that Welsh speaking individuals are given access to cognitive assessments through the medium of Welsh. Unfortunately, no cognitive clinical assessments have been validated through the medium of Welsh. The aim therefore is to conduct  expansive and systematic assessments across a large cross-section of elderly Welsh-English speakers living with dementia in order to validate the cognitive clinical assessments.

Our findings will be shared with clinicians so that they can be used within assessments at memory clinics across Wales.

As a result, this research will have a direct impact on clinical practice.
