Prion diseases (CJD, mad cow disease, scrapie, kuru etc) are rare but always fatal. There are no treatments or medicines available at present to treat these diseases. By using novel chemistry, PROTACs (proteolysis targeting chimeras), to target malformed proteins, we are now able to try to develop innovative therapies and treatments to fight these diseases. As well as using synthetic chemistry, computational chemistry, biochemical and biological tests and assays will be used to discover suitable drugs. This research project highlights the importance of collaboration and the use of a number of different scientific disciplines to meet an ambitious aim.
