Wales, Underdevelopment and World Systems Theory
The aim of my dissertation is to explore the feasibility of using World Systems and Dependency Theories to explain the relative position of the Welsh economy within the UK and global economies, and connected with this, whether they can help us better understand economically, geographically and culturally peripheral regions of developed states.
The key question arising from the dissertation, therefore, is "What has led to the relative poverty of countries such as Wales?" In taking a comparative approach with other European countries and inspiration from the work of scholars such as Andre Gunder Frank and Paul Baran, I explore the extent to which this is a political process or the extent to which it derives from Wales's function within the capitalist economy as a resource-rich country at the mercy of the flow of global capitalism which has now become a source of low-paid labour.
