The focus of the research is nationalism and national identity. The starting point for my work is an explanation the main theoretical themes in the works of J. R. Jones, as well as his philosophical, theological and political influences, such as the work of Fichte, Herder and Wittgenstein. The structure of the chapters is based on these themes, and the themes will be developed more broadly and in more detail in order to connect them with contemporary discussions regarding ‘political philosophy’ and ‘political theory’. The chapters vary from analysing the cultural and intellectual function of language to the history of Welsh nationalism, especially before the establishment of Plaid Cymru. These chapters take the form of independent articles, but nevertheless they will be combined to present a sustained, consistent argument. One of the main aims of this project is to underline J. R. Jones' contribution to the intellectual discussion regarding nationalism in order to highlight his role as an incisive and original thinker, as well as a political campaigner.
