Cynllun Colegau Cymru

What is Cynllun Colegau Cymru?

Cynllun Colegau Cymru is a framework for teaching Welsh as a second language to trainees studying primary teacher training courses (BA/BEd and PGCE), which leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

Cynllun Colegau Cymru is studied across all three centres that provide Initial Teacher Training (ITT), namely:

  • The North and Mid Wales Centre of Teacher Education (Aberystwyth University and Bangor University).
  • The South West Wales Centre of Teacher Education (University of Wales: Trinity St David’s).
  • The South East Wales Centre for Teacher Education and Training (Cardiff Metropolitan University and the University of South Wales).

The Welsh language skills level of these prospective teachers is assessed through a number of specific assessments during the training period. Every student is expected to keep a portfolio of these assessments. At the end of the training period, students studying initial teacher training courses will be awarded a Certificate that notes their attainment level (Step 1 – Step 3).

Furthermore, a collection of valuable resources has been developed to support this scheme. These resources could be of assistance to anyone teaching a language in the classroom.
