Why did you choose to study the degree subject?
Reptiles and amphibians have interested me since I was a small child. The course's focus on Herpetology was very appealing to me. In addition, the department is strong and the lecturers include some of the best researchers in the field.
Why did you choose to study through the medium of Welsh?
I want to continue to use my Welsh and I feel that it is important to reinforce the use of Welsh within the world of science and higher education.
What's the best thing about studying a course partly through the medium of Welsh?
It's an opportunity to practice my Welsh and improve my employability. There are also better learning conditions as classes are smaller and so you get a more personal learning experience.
Any advice for prospective students who are worried about studying through the medium of Welsh?
Studying partly through the medium of Welsh allows you to communicate with a wider body of students. If you are worried about the standard of your language, don't. There is so much support available to help you and language resources too. The support of Welsh language tutors is also a big help and facilitates the experience of learning through the medium of Welsh.
Would you encourage others to apply for a Coleg Cymraeg scholarship and why?
I would encourage any Welsh-speaking students and learners to apply for the scholarships that the Coleg offers. Studying in Welsh offers all-important opportunities to build confidence and improve your bilingual skills. It also affords better studying opportunities and more support during your course.
Why did you apply to be an ambassador and what are you most looking forward to?
As an ambassador for the Coleg Cymraeg I want to encourage people to use their Welsh in higher education and improve the representation of Welsh in STEM subjects such as Science. The Incentive Scholarship has benefited me greatly and I would like to see other students benefit from the same opportunity.
What do you enjoy most about being at university?
I enjoy the independence of being at university. The course is of a high standard, with good learning experiences in a very beautiful environment. You won't find anything better!
In my free time I enjoy reading and Taekwondo. I also enjoy taking part in voluntary work with my local reptile and amphibian groups to monitor and undertake maintenance work on important habitats.
