Gethin graduated in Psychology from Caius College Cambridge in 1989. He then spent many years working for a number of television companies on a variety of programmes.
As he was mostly interested in history television programmes, he decided to pursue his interest in history by starting to study towards a doctorate in the Department of History and Welsh History at Cardiff University. His research topic was the history of the Welsh in the Cariboo Gold Rush in British Columbia. During that time, he taught seminars on the history of modern Wales, before joining the department’s staff in 2009.
He worked on the ‘Welsh Voices of the Great War Online’ project, a scheme which collected material from the Great War period from families across Wales, and placed it on the web. All the material can now be found on the People's Collection Wales website.
