The doctorate looks at elements in law that involve legal recognitions of the relationship between two adults. At present, not every relationship between two adults is given a legal recognition, and marriage and civil partnerships are treated differently to relationships not formally recognised. The research studies the current principles that form the basis of the law in England and Wales, before going on to compare this with the situation in Australia, where the system is very different.
