Using the Welsh Language in Sport – Sports Apprentice Bursary
In January 2019 the Further Education and Apprenticeships Action Plan was published Towards Welsh 2050: a million speakers. The emphasis in the plan is on targeting all learners and ensuring the widest possible use is made of learners ' Welsh language skills.
One of the areas that has been identified where there is a clear demand for bilingual skills is the field of sport.
The Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol will offer bursaries worth £250 to sports apprentices and Further Education learners to begin in January 2020. The scheme will be reviewed before the end of 2021.
The Apprentice or learner will be required to complete a short bilingual application form. The form will detail the use they will make of the Welsh language in the apprenticeship or learning programme. It is emphasised here that there an enthusiasm to promote the use of Welsh (i) personally and (ii) in the work which is key and not necessarily the level of language skills of The Apprentice/learner.
Apprenticeship providers and Further Education Colleges will be able to nominate apprentices and learner each year. The Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol retains the right to only award two bursaries per institution dependent upon the number of applications received. Providers are encouraged to give priority where reasonably possible to groups under-represented among bilingual sports trainers in particular individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds and/or BAME individuals.
The Apprentice/learner is asked to provide one short report on the work undertaken using and promoting the Welsh language. The report will be due 6 months after receiving the bursary. The reports may be based on or taken from the E-Portfolios or work submitted digitally.
Once a valid nomination has been received the bursary will be paid to the nominee in January.
