Branch Officer: Lois Griffiths

At Swansea University, we aim to ensure that students get the best of both worlds: a Welsh language experience in a university with multicultural and international links.

Swansea University’s branch of the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol is located at Academi Hywel Teifi. Its main aim is to provide students with assistance and support to study and socialise through the medium of Welsh.

As a new student, you will receive an invitation to a Welsh medium welcome event during freshers’ week, which will give you an opportunity to get to know branch officers and Swansea University’s Welsh medium lecturers.

The University has over 25 courses that are eligible for the Coleg’s Main Scholarship, and over 40 courses eligible for Incentive Scholarships. The University continues to develop Welsh language provision in order to give students more choice when studying here.

The branch arranges all kinds of activities during the year, including events for schools, welcome events for freshers, events for Welsh-speaking students, formal meetings, discussion forums, gigs and much more!

Accommodation is allocated for students who wish to live with other Welsh-speaking students at Penmaen Hall. There is also a Welsh language society that provides opportunities to socialise with other Welsh speakers at the University.

Student Opinion

“I decided to study Welsh at Swansea because of Academi Hywel Teifi, the friendly staff and the general support for Welsh-speaking students. Having all the Welsh language stuff under one roof is so convenient. And with the beach less than a minute from the campus, Swansea is the ideal place for learning and leisure.”
